FromSoftware’s latest RPG has a bunch of systems that should be familiar to fans of its iconic Souls series, but there are a few new ones along the way. One, in particular, is Ashes of War, which allows players to imbue weapons with special attacks. As we’ve gone over in another guide, it requires the Whetstone Knife to make use of. But there’s actually an upgrade, too. Here’s how to get Iron Whetblade and what it does in Elden Ring.
The Iron Whetblade is an upgrade to the regular Whetstone Knife that gives players three new options when applying an Ash of War to their weapons. There are other similar new tools in Elden Ring but this one is useful in the early game and can be found pretty quickly into the Stormveil Castle legacy dungeon.
Location
Find a Stonesword Key and head to Stormveil Castle by the Lost Grace at the Rampart tower site. If you haven’t gotten here yet, take the shortcut the gatekeeper recommends. You’ll see a tall building with spiraling stairs. Head up the stairs, and you’ll see the Site of Lost Grace there. There will be lots of enemies guarding the site.
You’ll see an Imp Statue blocking off a room. Unlock the fog gate here using the key, and you’ll see an enemy behind it. After winning the battle, check the bodies in the room, and you should find the Iron Whetblade on one of them.
What Does the Iron Whetblade Do?
The Iron Whetblade essentially opens up more options when adding Ashes of War to equipment. The regular Whetstone Knife lets you modify weapons to become “standard” or “quality.”
Standard just grants the magic, special attack, etc. to the weapon, while quality changes stats of the weapon.
By comparison, the Iron Whetblade opens up more option, such as heavy, keen, magic.
